Raising funds for chefs is icing on the cake!

What do birthdays, workouts, and Growing Chefs have in common? This year, our superstar volunteer, Barb Mackenzie, combined her passion for all three at her annual birthday workout. We’ve asked Barb to tell us all about it!

Barb stretches at her Annual Birthday Workout & Fundraiser.

How did you become involved with the Growing Chefs community?
I think I must have been doing a Google search to see about cool, inspiring programs in the community, by the community and came across Growing Chefs. I was so surprised and happy to learn it was a local program, teaching kids such great skills and knowledge. I thought the classroom program was absolutely amazing and wanted to learn how I could get involved.

Tell us more about your birthday workouts?
In lieu of birthday gifts I wanted to spread the love to the community and thought, what better way than to collect monetary donations and work with Growing Chefs to bring this program into a local Elementary School. So once a year, family and friends will get together to sweat it out! I host a different workout annually, and it's a great way for all of us to make time to come together, try something new, get out of our comfort zones and have fun together.

What inspires you to give back to your community?
It's something that just feels great, and fills my soul. Friends and family also love having the opportunity to get involved, and are always down to support as long as there's somebody coordinating the effort, lol. And now having three kids, I love getting them involved, and teaching them about thinking of others before themselves.

Do you have any advice for people that want to host a unique event or fundraiser?
Find something you love doing, or something you've always wanted to try and rally all your friends and family. Reach out to the place you want to do something with, and they'll coordinate the details with you. The "fun" part is picking a date and time that works for most schedules, but if you have enough lead time, I find most people can make it happen. Humans love a reason to come together, and what better way then something fun, out of our comfort zone, community building and something we get to do together.

Creative Community Impact Stories feature members of our community that are raising funds and awareness for Growing Chefs by doing what they love. If you have an idea for a fundraiser or a friend-raiser, reach out, we would love to hear from you.

From Farms to Forks is Back in Person!

You're invited! On November 6, 2022, at 5:30 pm, we are holding our 13th annual From Farms to Forks harvest kitchen party. IN PERSON! From Farms to Forks pairs many of the province’s greatest chefs with B.C.'s finest growers and producers. Hosted in the dining room and teaching kitchens of the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, guests watch the chefs in action, meet the growers, and enjoy delicious tasting plates* - each paired with a different wine from Mission Hill Family Estate Winery. This years' seated event includes an in-person silent and live auction for event attendees, as well as an online auction and raffle open to all of our supporters.

The aim is to raise $75,000 for Growing Chefs edible education programming and initiatives throughout the current school year supporting B.C. kids and their families.

Limited tickets are available for $250 each.

To avoid service fees:

Please notify us (afton@growingchefs.ca) if you're planning to purchase tickets outside of the online platform. Seating is limited and we don't want you to miss out.

* Many tasting plates will have a vegetarian alternative, however, the food may not be suitable for those who choose to eat vegan or have severe allergies. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Give the Gift of Gardens, Give the Gift of Growth

Did you see the lights? Last night, Science World glowed green for Growing Chefs! Tonight, on Giving Tuesday, BC Place is also going to be lit up green. When you see those lights, we hope you’re reminded of the hard work our chef volunteers put in to help kids’ connections to food take root.

Too many kids lack access to healthy, whole food or know where food comes from or how it’s grown. Growing Chefs! is on a mission to change that. Through our food literacy programs, delivered by teams of chef and community volunteers, we give kids and youth hands-on experience with the whole food cycle, from seed to plate to compost

Your donation this holiday season will help more BC kids build connections to the earth, local food systems, and with one another as they care for and harvest their gardens, and prepare and share meals together. We hope to raise $20,000 by the end of 2019.

A donation of:

  • $500 is equivalent to the cost of all the gardening and cooking equipment for one class

  • $200 is equivalent to the entire cost of the Classroom Gardening & Cooking Program for one student

  • $150 is equivalent to soil, seeds, and all of the gardening equipment needed for one classroom garden

  • $25 is equivalent to soil for one classroom garden
