Overall Summary
Growing Chefs! is excited to bring on a Program Assistant to support our Growing Chefs! Classroom Gardening and Cooking program. Our Program Assistant will support our front-line program teams, provide administrative assistance and lead community outreach efforts.  

This position is a 9-week full-time contract funded by the Canada Summer Jobs initiative. Candidates must be returning full-time students to be eligible. Please visit the Canada Summer Jobs to see the list of eligibility requirements. 

In this key support role, the Program Assistant will be responsible for supporting and enriching the volunteer program, as well as contributing to the administration of Growing Chefs! It will offer the successful candidate an inside view of the workings of a non-profit environment, and provide valuable training and job skills applicable to both the for-profit and non-profit sectors.

We are looking for an individual passionate about food sustainability and working with children and volunteers to help our front-line program facilitators to maximize their experience with Growing Chefs! We are also seeking a candidate keen to assist with the support and development of our non-profit administrative tasks.

This position is based in Vancouver.  Commitment is 30hrs/ week—may occasionally include evenings and weekends. Hourly rate is $13/hr.  The anticipated start date is July 4th.
Program Coordination:

  • Assist with volunteer recruitment, training, and coordination, including but not limited to answering volunteer and teacher inquiries, calling volunteer candidates and volunteer references, organizing volunteer and teacher data.
  • Assist with volunteer and teacher training, set-up and delivery of volunteer and teacher orientation sessions.
  • Act as a liaison between volunteer teams and Growing Chefs! staff and provide assistance to volunteer teams in planning and delivering the Growing Chefs! lessons.
  • Coordinate, organize, set up, deliver, and maintain program equipment.
  • Assist with program administrative duties, such as volunteer and teacher sign ups, and volunteer and teacher contact information.
  • Perform other duties, as needed.


  • Assist with administrative duties, such as filing, data entry, reporting, scheduling, and other duties as needed.
  • Assist with the entry of volunteer information in Salesforce (familiarity with Salesforce an asset).

Communications/ Fundraising

  • Generate content and update social media sites, online postings, blog, and website.
  • Assist with layout graphic design and production of Annual Report
  • Assist with administrative support, coordination, marketing and promotion of Growing Chefs! fundraising campaigns and events
  • Perform other duties as required.

Community Outreach

  • Participate in and coordinate Growing Chefs! community outreach workshops and community events.
  • Attend community outreach events and host Growing Chefs! outreach tables and festival booths.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Potential candidates should possess:

  • Experience working with a volunteer base and an understanding of volunteer relations.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent organization skills, ability to work to strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Experience working with children and youth in an educational environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Documents, and MailChimp
  • A passion for supporting local and urban agriculture.

Additional skills an asset:

  • Basic knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop
  • Basic knowledge of SalesForce
  • Experience in community outreach and community events
  • An understanding of data management and constituent relationship management
  • An understanding of online and offline marketing and promotions
  • Driver’s License
