Interested in flexing your communications and event planning muscles? You’re in luck! Growing Chefs! is looking for a motivated and creative individual to join our team as our  Communications and Events Volunteer.
Volunteering at Growing Chefs! is a great way to learn the ins and outs of the not-for-profit world, work in a fun and young office environment, and get great work experience.
Our Communications and Events Volunteer will be responsible for a wide-range of activities, including event planning and coordination, social media and communications strategy, administrative support, and community outreach activities. In this role, you’ll learn about the various aspects of non-profit marketing, communications, and event planning while working for a well-known community based non-profit.

This Vancouver-based unpaid volunteer position is a part-time 20 hours/week position. The anticipated start date is September 16th, 2013. The volunteer position is three months long with the possibility of renewal. May occasionally include evenings and weekends and may occasionally require additional hours.

  • Update, maintain, grow and analyze Growing Chefs’ social media presence           
  • Help develop and implement a communications and marketing strategy for Growing Chefs’ fundraising events and campaigns
  • Generate engaging and relevant blog posts
  • Assist in planning and writing of our eNewsletter
  • Help develop and coordinate fundraising and marketing campaigns
  • Draft and distribute news releases, media alerts and other stories
  • Design flyers, graphics and other marketing material 
  • Update the website and generate website content when needed            
  • Collaborate with staff on new ideas, directions, and venues for marketing and communications
  • Perform additional duties as required

Events and Community Outreach

  • Assist with coordination of Growing Chefs’ signature gala—From Farms to Forks
  • Assist with event volunteer recruitment and coordination
  • Help with post-event communications, including donor stewardship and recognition
  • Help develop and solicit in-kind donations. May include cold-calling, lead follow up, and tracking.
  • Coordinate and solicit silent auction donations
  • Assist with all event promotion and marketing efforts
  • Perform additional duties as required
  • Participate in and coordinate Growing Chefs! community outreach workshops and community events. Assist with development of workshops and community outreach partnerships.

This role will also require performing additional administrative responsibilities as required, and will include, but are not limited to, filing, data entry, scheduling meetings, and receptionist services.
Potential candidates should possess:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Grammar is a must. You’ve also got to be succinct and effective in the space of 140 characters
  • Effective time management skills
  • Attention (borderline obsession) with detail
  • A pro-active, self-starter attitude
  • Ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines
  • Fluency with social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Wordpress, Flickr, Google +, Youtube, and Pinterest
  • Experience with Social Media tracking, reporting and analysis
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
  • Computer literacy
  • Experience with event planning and coordination
  • An ability to work well alone or with others
  • Good organizational skills
  • A passion for supporting local and urban agriculture
  • Experience liaising with vendors, stakeholders, and organizations

Additional skills an asset:

  • Knowledge of graphic design
  • Professional fundraising experience
  • Basic knowledge of Drupal or other website content management system
